چکیده

Many spatio-temporal phenomena (both natural and human) change in time cycles, e.g., seasonal change of weather and pattern of people’s daily activities, which required a cyclic view of time. However, most GIS systems and cartographic representation adopt Cartesian Coordinate Systems (CCSs), which force time to be perceived as a linear dimension. Therefore, the cyclic change cannot be effectively represented in CCSs. This paper thus proposes the use of Polar Coordinate Systems (PCSs) to represent the phenomena with cyclic changes. In a PCS, polar angles are used to represent cyclic time, which can be clock time at daily, monthly or yearly resolution; polar distances are applied to represent moving extensions of the phenomena in two-dimensional space. The examples of yearly temperature of a city and human activity patterns are used to illustrate how cyclic changes can be represented in a PCS.

Visualizing Cyclic Spatio-Temporal Patterns in Polar Coordinate System

Spatio-temporal phenomena used to be represented in Cartesian Coordinate Systems, and time is perceived linear. This way of representing time may not be appropriate for representing and analysing some types of natural and human phenomena, which occur in time cycles. This paper thus proposes the use of polar coordinate systems. Polar angles are used to represent time, which can be clock time at ...

A Polar Coordinate System Based Grid Algorithm for Star Identification

In Cartesian coordinate systems, the angular separation-based star identification algorithms involve much trigonometric function computing. That delays the algorithm process. As in a polar coordinate system, the coordinates are denoted by angular values, it is potential to speed up the star identification process by adopting a polar coordinate system. An angular polar coordinate system is intro...

Transient Two-Dimensional (r-z) Cyclic Charging/Discharging Analysis of Space Thermal Energy Storage Systems (RESEARCH NOTE)

A two-dimensional transient axi-symmetric model was developed to study the effects of various thermal and geometric parameters on cyclic heating and cooling modes of a phase-change thermal energy storage system. The high-temperature thermal energy storage device utilizes LiH for heat sink applications to store the waste heat generated during power-burst periods. The stored heat is then discharg...

Thermodynamic analysis of the heparin interaction with a basic cyclic peptide using isothermal titration calorimetry.

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was examined as part of a continuing study of the interaction of proteins and peptides with the glycosaminoglycan heparin. BNP was tentatively identified as a heparin-binding protein on the basis of its cyclic structure and the high frequency of the basic amino acid residues, lysine and arginine. Thermodynamic analysis using isothermal titration calorimetry confi...

Estimation of Non-Cartesian Local Structure Tensor Fields

In medical imaging, signals acquired in non-Cartesian coordinate systems are common. For instance, CT and MRI often produce significantly higher resolution within scan planes, compared to the distance between two adjacent planes. Even oblique sampling occurs, by the use of gantry tilt. In ultrasound imaging, samples are acquired in a polar coordinate system, which implies a spatially varying me...
